Be sure to enroll early! Most schools charge different rates depending on your enrollment. It is important to enroll early so financial aid can be awarded appropriately and in a timely manner. Without enrollment data, departmental and financial aid cannot be awarded. Please also note that changes to your course enrollment may also impact your awards.
Billing Due Dates
Be sure to know the bill date and due date for each term of your enrollment. Keep in mind that both dates vary by department. To view both the bill and due date for your particular program, see Billing Due Dates. Note that if payments are not received by the specified payment due date, a late fee of 1.5% is assessed to the amount past due.
Signing up for Direct Deposit is a safe and convenient way to receive your refund quicker. If you do not have Direct Deposit, your refund will process as a check, and be sent to your local mailing address as it appears in SIS. Please be sure to allow 48 hours from the time you sign up and/or change account information for the changes to be implemented.
The University requires all graduate students to have health insurance and to provide proof of such insurance on an annual basis through the Hard Waiver Program. Please see below for the category that is applicable to you.
Students who receive a Health Insurance Subsidy
Graduate students who receive a Health Insurance Subsidy in their departmental aid package should enroll with the UVA Aetna Student Health Insurance plan and follow the enrollment instructions. Students receiving the Health Insurance Subsidy must enroll in the University’s student health insurance plan each year. The 2017-2018 health insurance plan provides coverage from August 15, 2017 through August 14, 2018. Graduate students may enroll starting July 6 and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to ensure adequate coverage. Please see our Health Insurance Subsidy page for more information.
Students who have an Alternative Health Insurance Plan*
Graduate students who have an alternative insurance plan and who do not wish to purchase the Aetna Student Health plan must request an insurance waiver on the online waiver site. This process becomes available on July 17, 2017 and must be completed no later than September 21, 2017.
Note that if your alternative health insurance plan does not meet UVA requirements for comparable coverage or if you fail to demonstrate comparable coverage in the online waiver site by September 27, 2017, you will be automatically enrolled in the Aetna plan and billed for its annual cost of $2,690. This charge will be posted to your SIS account on September 29, 2017 and payment will become due on October 31, 2017.
Please see www.virginia.edu/studenthealth/hardwaiver for specific comparable coverage requirements.
