A Guide to the CSS/PROFILE

The CSS/PROFILE ("Profile"), administered by College Board, is an online application that collects information used by certain colleges, including UVA, and scholarship programs to award state and University funds. (All Federal funds are awarded based on the FAFSA, available after Oct. 1 at fafsa.ed.gov.)

  • All first-year and transfer undergraduate students are encouraged to complete the Profile their first year to be considered for all forms of need-based aid.
  • Returning students who qualified for need-based aid in prior years should complete the Profile.  If you have any doubts, please contact SFS for guidance.  We would much rather help you evaluate whether or not you should complete the Profile than have you assume you should not and potentially miss out on aid!

Below we have provided some helpful resources for students and parents to review in preparation for filling out the Profile.

Review the Interactive Presentation: CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Overview as well as the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Student Tutorial.

For new undergraduate students for the fall, check out the College Board's interactive instructions.

For returning undergraduate students, the process of completing the Profile is going to look a bit different this year.  Specifically:

  • the registration step has been eliminated, and your information will be saved from the moment you first interact with the Profile
  • the new student dashboard will provide a consolidated view of important information, including deadline dates and next steps
