On December 6, 2019, the University's Board of Visitors approved tuition and fees rates for the 2020-2021 academic year.
Each year Student Financial Services establishes standard estimates to help families determine their financial needs for the year, and for financial aid awarding purposes. This page contains estimates of the Cost of Attendance for one year (Fall and Spring semesters) at the University of Virginia, including tuition and fees, housing, dining, personal expenses and travel. All values are in US dollars.
The information on this page assumes a student who is living in Charlottesville and is being charged the full comprehensive fee. For more information on the comprehensive fee for fall 2020, see the FAQ for "Tuition and Fees" on the Student FAQ on the Return to Grounds page.

Upon request, a student's budget may be increased to cover the cost of health insurance. The allowable amount for 2020-2021 is $2,980.
The cost of attendance information below pertains to undergraduate students only.
For information about the upcoming meeting of the UVA Board of Visitors on March 5, 2021, please see the linked notice regarding tuition and fees, published in accordance with §23.1-307(D), (E), and (F) of the Code of Virginia requiring 30 days notification.
Please note that if you leave the University for any reason and return in a later semester, you will be subject to the tuition and fee rates established by the Board of Visitors for the academic year in which you return, based upon your academic level upon your return. Your school of enrollment can confirm your academic level at the time of your return to the University.
Undergraduate Living Expenses
The following estimated expenses apply to students in any undergraduate program. They are listed as "Additional Categories" in the subsequent estimated Cost of Attendance tables for each program. Please note that independent undergraduate student budgets differ by the inclusion of a health insurance amount for the year.
The personal expenses estimates shown below reflect modest and restrained expense allowances for University of Virginia students. Some students will spend more than the estimated amounts while others will spend less, depending on individual choices and circumstances. Eligibility for financial aid, however, is based on the standard estimated allowance, not on individual preferences and spending habits.
An important note on possible adjustments to cost of attendance items for spring 2021:
- If a student has indicated they will be living away from Charlottesville and will not have housing costs for the spring 2021 term, the comprehensive fee, housing, and travel cost of attendance line items will be reduced accordingly. Students receiving financial aid will therefore have a reduction in their financial need and a corresponding adjustment in their financial aid offer. Because University grants and scholarships are the "last dollar" items added to the financial aid offer, they will be the first items adjusted on the financial aid offer.
- If a student has indicated they will be in Charlottesville (or away from Charlottesville but with housing costs) for the spring 2021 term, the student should see no change to their cost of attendance line items or their financial aid.

Fees category for the School of Nursing includes Comprehensive Fee, $50 University Fee and $24 School Fee. There are additional Nursing Laboratory Fees ($90/credit hour, and excluding Clinical Nurse Leader program students) as well as Clinical Services fees for BSN students ($354) and Clinical Nurse Leader program students ($628).
January Term 2021
Students who were charged full-time tuition for the fall 2020 term will not be charged tuition for their January Term 2021 class. The cost for books, supplies, and other costs for January term is $580.
For all other students, the per credit hour rate for summer session undergraduate tuition is $423 for in-state students and $1,552 for out-of-state students. Other costs total $580.
