Important Reminders

Enrollment

Be sure to enroll early! Most schools charge different rates depending on your enrollment. It is important to enroll early so financial aid can be awarded appropriately and in a timely manner. Without enrollment data, departmental and financial aid cannot be awarded. Please also note that changes to your course enrollment may also impact your awards.

Billing Due Dates

Be sure to know the bill date and due date for each term of your enrollment. Keep in mind that both dates vary by department. To view both the bill and due date for your particular program, see Billing Due Dates. Note that if payments are not received by the specified payment due date, a late fee of 1.5% may be assessed to the amount past due.

Direct Deposit

Signing up for direct deposit is a safe and convenient way to receive your refund quicker. If you do not have direct deposit, your refund will process as a check, and be sent to your local mailing address as it appears in SIS. Please be sure to allow 48 hours from the time you sign up and/or change account information for the changes to be implemented. If you do not have direct deposit and your refund check goes to an outdated address, we require a 30-day waiting period for the check to be returned. After 30 days, and once you have signed up for direct deposit, we can reissue the refund by direct deposit.

Health Insurance

The University requires all graduate students to have health insurance and to provide proof of such insurance on an annual basis through the Insurance Verification Program. Please see below for the category that is applicable to you.

Students Who Receive a Health Insurance Subsidy

Graduate students who receive a Health Insurance Subsidy in their departmental aid package should enroll with the UVA Aetna Student Health Insurance plan and follow the enrollment instructions. Students receiving the Health Insurance Subsidy must enroll in the University’s student health insurance plan each year. The 2024-2025 health insurance plan provides coverage from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2025. Graduate students may enroll starting in July and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to ensure adequate coverage. Please see our Health Insurance Subsidy page for more information.

Students Who Have an Alternative Insurance Plan

Graduate students who have an alternative insurance plan and who do not wish to purchase the Aetna Student Health plan must request an insurance waiver on the online waiver site. This process becomes available in July 2024 and must be completed no later than August 31, 2024.

Note that if your alternative health insurance plan does not meet UVA requirements for comparable coverage or if you fail to demonstrate comparable coverage in the online waiver site by August 31, 2024, you will be automatically enrolled in the Aetna plan and billed for its annual cost of $3,877. This charge will be posted to your SIS account by the end of September, and payment will become due on October 31, 2024.

Students Who Do Not Have Health Insurance

Graduate students who do not currently have health insurance may enroll in the UVA Aetna Student Health Insurance plan starting July 2024. The 2024-2025 health insurance plan provides coverage from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2025. Graduate students may enroll starting in July and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to ensure adequate coverage.

If you do not take any action by August 31, 2024, you will be automatically enrolled in the Aetna plan and billed for its annual cost of $3,877. This charge will be posted to your SIS account by the end of September, and payment will become due on October 31, 2024.
