Leaving the University

Checklist for students preparing to leave the University

  • Ensure that you have granted authorized user status in UVAPay for anyone who may need to access your financial records at a later date.
  • Review information about leaving the University in the University Record.
  • Cancel your University meal plan, if you are going to be leaving before your plan period ends. Note that there is a $50 cancellation fee.
  • Cancel your Telecom/Cable contract
  • Return all library books to the appropriate library.
  • If living on Grounds, return your keys to Housing. Note that after the 5th day of classes for the term, you are responsible for the full charges for your housing. There is a $150 replacement fee if you fail to return your keys.
  • Check with Parking and Transportation to ensure you have no outstanding tickets to pay off.
  • Check with SFS to ensure you have no charges on your account.
  • If you are actively using CAPS, contact your counselor there to inform them that you are departing the University.
  • Request several copies of your Official Transcript from the Office of the University Registrar (UREG). Don’t break the seal on them or they become unofficial transcripts.
  • Complete Loan Exit Counseling for Direct and/or Institutional/Nursing Loans. There will be To Do List items on your SIS account soon after you have left the University.
  • For any student loans, go to studentaid.gov to learn about your loan servicer and to inquire about loan repayment options
  • Consult with your academic advisor to ensure re-entry to the University at a later date is simplified.
  • If you are done with your degree after the fall or January term but intend to walk in spring Final Exercises, consult with your school about being placed in Affiliated Status for the spring term. There is a $211 charge for this.
