Students studying abroad in an approved study abroad program will be considered for the same federal, state, and institutional aid programs that would be available if they were studying in Charlottesville, except for the federal work-study program. The amount of aid we offer will be based on the student's demonstrated financial need.
Students interested in studying abroad should always look at the budget sheet of estimated costs for the program available through the Education Abroad website before committing. If your costs for studying abroad are lower than studying in Charlottesville, as is the case often for out-of-state students, your financial aid will be lower to match your reduced need (lower cost = lower need). If your costs for study abroad are higher than studying in Charlottesville, as is the case for most in-state students, your financial aid will be higher to meet your increased need (higher cost = higher need).
Applicants should be aware there is a limited amount of scholarship and grant funding available for students studying abroad. Students with demonstrated financial need who wish to study abroad will be considered for a Study Abroad Grant, which may provide additional aid for study abroad program costs or substitute for need-based loans. The grant may be used for study on UVA Programs, exchanges, or other approved study abroad programs. To be considered for grants and scholarships, please submit the ISO Scholarship Application.
