Study Abroad

Students studying abroad in an approved study abroad program will be considered for the same federal, state, and institutional aid programs that would be available if they were studying in Charlottesville, except for the federal work-study program. The amount of aid awarded by Student Financial Services will be based on the student's demonstrated financial need.  Federal, state and institutional grants awarded during the semester abroad will not exceed the amount the student would receive while studying on-Grounds for a term.  Students interested in studying abroad should always look at the budget sheet of estimated costs before committing to a study abroad program.

Applicants should be aware there is a limited amount of scholarship and grant funding available for students studying abroad. Students with demonstrated financial need who wish to study abroad will be considered for a Study Abroad Grant, which may provide additional aid for study abroad program costs or substitute for need-based loans. The grant may be used for study on UVA Programs, Exchanges, or other approved study abroad programs. Apply to study abroad and your application will be evaluated for eligibility.

Semester at Sea is now managed by Colorado State University.  Students interested in Semester at Sea should contact Colorado State University for more information about the program.
